Earthjustice: Advancing on Wheeler Nomination during Shutdown “Slap in the Face” to Families Hurt by Government Closures

Senate Republicans announced intent to proceed to hearings for new EPA head on Jan. 16, despite lack of resolution to shutdown

Washington, D.C. – The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee intends to proceed to nomination hearings for Andrew Wheeler, acting head of EPA and President Trump’s pick to lead the agency, today. The move comes as hundreds of thousands of federal workers, including virtually all of EPA’s staff, will miss paychecks because of a three-week long government shutdown initiated over President Trump’s demands for a border wall.

The following is a statement from Martin Hayden, Vice President of Policy and Legislation, Earthjustice:

“President Trump and Senate Republicans’ decision to proceed on Andrew Wheeler’s nomination to head EPA in the middle of President Trump’s shutdown is a slap in the face to the millions of people suffering from this misguided impasse. Federal workers and their families are struggling to pay their bills and stay in their homes, millions of people are on the brink of losing the food assistance that stands between their families and starvation, and the Trump Administration is intent on spending EPA’s resources to elevate a former coal lobbyist to a six-figure taxpayer-funded job now? This action is a disgrace – even by the standards of an administration accustomed to it.”
