Sierra Club Statement: Trump’s Border Wall Deal Should Be Rejected
Using the lives of Dreamers and immigrants as bargaining chips for a destructive wall is abhorrent
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Donald Trump proposed a deal to end the shutdown he started that would include $5.7 billion for his border wall in exchange temporarily extending protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and legislation to extend the legal status of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
"Using the lives of Dreamers and immigrants as bargaining chips for a destructive wall is abhorrent. Trump has shown zero regard for immigrant youth, separating children from families at the border, ending DACA and TPS, and blocking the Dream Act. No community should have to be sacrificed to keep our government running, especially for Trump’s unwanted and unnecessary border wall. This is a toxic deal from a toxic president and it should be rejected out of hand.”
