Hello all,

Please amplify our allies on the immigration fight and use our messaging to counter Trump's announcement as appropriate.

#TrumpShutdown | Trump's Saturday Announcement

Today, President Trump made another political ploy to pressure Democrats into supporting his unnecessary and divisive border wall.

Here is CDP's topline messaging and social media guidance (United We Dream talking points below):

President Trump and Leader McConnell must end the shutdown now to protect our kids’ health and America’s great outdoors.

Trump's announcement continues to ignore the fact that public servants who should be at work defending our clean air, water, and our great outdoors missed their first paycheck and are uncertain when they will receive another one. National parks are overflowing with garbage and human waste without park rangers to maintain the land and cleanup has halted for the toxic Superfund sites across our country.

The American people made their voices clear when they rejected the Trump agenda and claimed a clear mandate to protect kids’ health, our public land, and waters, and our cherished wildlife. It’s time for Trump and Mitch McConnell to listen to the American people and end the shutdown now.

The #TrumpShutdown along with Mitch McConnell's, @senatemajldr, refusal to stop him is a moral failure that puts our kids’ health and our great outdoors at risk! #EndTheShutdown now!

Trump continued to shut down the government instead of ensuring our kids have access to clean air and water. Families deserve for Mitch McConnell, @senatemajldr, to end his silence and stop the #TrumpShutdown now!

Families’ access to the great outdoors relies on funding protections for our public lands and waters, but the #TrumpShutdown puts that all at risk!

Mitch McConnell, @senatemajldr, must end his silence and stop the #TrumpShutdown now!

Congress must stand up and ensure that none of Trump’s poison pill riders harm our outdoor spaces! #DirtyBudget #NoPoisonPills Mitch McConnell must stop Trump from turning his back on future generations for a cheap, political stunt. It’s on @senatemajldr to end the #TrumpShutdown now.

United We Dream Talking Points

Background:

Today, Donald Trump plans to speak at the White House, saying he will finally reopen the government if taxpayers pay him $5 billion to build his Wall and give him other harsh changes to immigration law.

There have been reports that he is open to re-negotiating the danger that he put immigrant youth and families into when he killed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program and Temporary Protective Status programs.

Topline messages:

  • Reopen the government now without a wall and without an expansion of deportation agencies. Do not use the suffering of immigrant youth and TPS families to allow Trump to enact his mass deportation agenda.

  • We are deeply skeptical of this proposal because time and time again, the White House has used negotiations to demand more detention camps and more billions for his Wall and mass deportation
  • More money for the wall, ICE and CBP agents and the expansion of detention camps for mass deportation are part of Trump’s white supremacist agenda and we reject it.
  • Trump has killed multiple proposals that would grant us true permanent protections, with a pathway to citizenship.

Political Context:

Trump is responsible for killing DACA and TPS, putting nearly one million immigrants in danger.

Trump and Republicans sabotaged the passage of a clean Dream Act.

This administration has unleashed attack after attack on our communities and demanded more money for detentions and deportations. It is wrong for Trump to use our lives as bargaining chips to force the American people to advance his white supremacist agenda

Already, immigrants have died at the hands of CBP - Claudia, who was shot in the head; Jakelin, who was denied water and died of dehydration. Fathers and brothers, like Cristobal Paute and Manuel Armando Arpi, have been torn away from their families in upstate New York at the hands of ICE. Enough is enough - these agencies must not be handed over more money and resources to detain and deport our communities. We continue to call for the defunding of ICE and CBP.
