Message of the Week: June 3, 2019
The American people have made it clear that they want bold action on climate change, and Democrats in Congress are responding to that call. The House of Representatives stepped up and passed
the Climate Action Now Act – the most significant climate legislation in a decade – and now Senate Democrats are developing their own legislation to ensure the U.S. meets its commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement. Together, these pieces of strong climate
legislation will protect communities across the country and around the world from the most imminent threats posed by climate change.
-
From rising seas to record-breaking wildfires and devastating flooding, it’s clear that we are facing a climate crisis. We need strong climate policy from Congress to protect our families, our health, and our planet.
-
The House of Representatives is doing its part and recently passed the Climate Action Now Act – the most significant climate legislation in a decade.
-
Now, Senate Democrats are working on legislation which will direct the Trump administration to develop a plan for the U.S. to meet its commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement and mitigate the worst impacts of climate change on our health and economy.
-
The American people have made it clear they want bold action on climate change, and support for climate action is growing across all age groups, all religions, and all political persuasions. In fact, nearly
two-thirds of Republicans now acknowledge climate change.
-
Despite this growing demand, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has no plan to adequately address climate change. He refuses to bring a meaningful vote on a plan to address climate change to the Senate floor, and even said himself that he is the “grim
reaper” of a legislative graveyard.
-
Time and again, Senator McConnell has demonstrated that his fossil fuel billionaire’s agenda is unforgivably out of touch with what the American people overwhelmingly support: bold action on climate change.
-
It’s the responsibility of elected officials to meet the demands of their constituents, not the demands of powerful fossil fuel interests. We have the ability to solve the climate crisis if Senator McConnell will allow consideration of measures that move us
toward a clean energy future.
