Subject: ***SIGN-ON Letter Supporting Rep. Lujan's Interior Approps Amendment DEADLINE COB TOMORROW***

Apologies for Cross-Posting

Hi All,

Please consider adding the name of your organization to this letter which supports Amendment #125 offered by Congressman Lujan to H.R. 3055 (Interior Approps). Under this amendment, no funds would be made available for the Department of the Interior to offer oil and gas leases within 10 miles of Chaco Culture National Historical Park. This would protect federal lands surrounding Chaco Canyon from additional oil and gas development. Here is the toolkit to support this amendment. The deadline to sign-on is COB tomorrow (EST)!

Here is the letter:

June 20th, 2019

Dear Representative:

On behalf of our millions of members and supporters, we urge you to support amendment #125 offered by Congressman Lujan to H.R. 3055, Commerce, Justice, Science, Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, Interior, Environment, Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Act, 2020.

VOTE YES: Lujan #125  - Under this amendment, no funds would be made available for the Department of the Interior to offer oil and gas leases within 10 miles of Chaco Culture National Historical Park. This would protect federal lands surrounding Chaco Canyon from additional oil and gas development. Located in the Four Corners region of Northern New Mexico, Chaco Canyon was the cultural center for Ancestral Puebloans, and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The canyon has some of America’s most well-preserved ancient dwellings and artifacts that document the history of this once-thriving gathering place. Drilling at the doorstep of the park would degrade the landscape and destroy the cultural experience that visitors enjoy. Leasing also threatens nearby communities whose homes, schools and community centers would be adversely affected by air and water pollution.

We, the undersigned coalition of organizations, support the protection and sustainable development of our nation's public lands for future generations, and urge you to vote in support of Rep. Lujan’s amendment #125 to protect the Chaco Cultural Heritage Area, as part of H.R. 3055.

Sincerely,

Please, if you have any questions please direct them to me peter_daigle@tws.org.

Thanks!

Peter
