Text of the letter:
Dear Representative:
On behalf of our millions of members and supporters nationwide, thank you for supporting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge provision in the Interior, Environment, and Related
Agencies omnibus appropriations bill by voting against Duncan/Young/Gosar amendment 143 (#130 to Division C of H.R. 3055). This amendment would have struck the Arctic Refuge provision aimed at ensuring that the oil and gas lease
sales in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge generate the expected federal revenue of $1 billion as promised in the 2017 Tax Act. Including this provision in the Interior appropriations bill requires the Bureau of Land Management to set a minimum bid on what
companies must pay to lease part of the Arctic Refuge’s fragile Coastal Plain for drilling.
The Arctic Refuge is home to a wide variety of wildlife and includes the calving grounds of the Porcupine Caribou Herd, which has sustained the Gwich’in Nation physically and
spiritually for millennia. The Arctic Refuge is a perfect example of a place where drilling and development should not occur, and it should not have been included in the 2017 Tax Act. Legislation, like H.R. 1146, is needed to restore protections for the Arctic
Refuge. H.R. 1146, led by Reps. Huffman (D-CA), Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and over 180 cosponsors is expected to head to the House floor for a vote soon and we need your support.
We look forward to continuing to work with you to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Your support of H.R. 1146 on the House floor is critically important. Again, thank
you for defending the Arctic Refuge provision in the Interior appropriations bill.
Sincerely,
Melanie
