“The Fiscal Year 2021 EPA Budget”

House Committee on Energy and Commerce

Tomorrow at 10:00 am, the Environment and Climate Change Subcommittee will hold a hearing in the John D. Dingell Room, 2123 Rayburn House Office Building with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler on President Trump’s EPA budget request for fiscal year 2021.

Live stream will be available here

Talking Points - public health and climate

  • President Trump’s latest budget proposal proves once again that he is the worst president in history when it comes to protecting our health and environment.
  • His administration is responsible for the rollbacks of nearly 100 public health and environment protections - leaving our communities, and our air, land, water, and wildlife increasingly vulnerable to the dangerous consequences of pollution and climate change.
  • Now, he’s proposing cutting the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) budget by $2.4 billion, or over 26%, making it abundantly clear that this administration does not believe protecting our health and the environment are a priority.
    • His proposed budget would leave the EPA with its smallest workforce in over three decades, cutting full-time civil servants from 14,172 in FY19 to 12,610, and would bring its annual operating budget to the lowest total since the 1980s in real dollars.
  • Thankfully, leaders on the House Energy & Commerce Committee are holding EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler’s feet to the fire for his avid support of a budget that slashes his own agency’s funding, as well as his overall support for President Trump’s toxic environmental agenda that is putting the public’s health in grave danger.
  • The EPA, led by former coal lobbyist Administrator Andrew Wheeler, is under attack from within its own walls.
  • Wheeler is just another one of Trump’s ‘Dirty Deputies.’ Under him, the EPA has seen an 80% decrease in enforcement actions and currently has the highest backlog of unfunded Superfund cleanup projects in 15 years. The proposed cuts would only make it harder for the EPA to do its job.
  • Trump and his Dirty Deputy Wheeler are ignoring the persistent threats to public health and the environment, and they are willfully ignoring the realities of climate change. The word ‘climate’ does not even appear in the 138-page main budget document, which contains severe cuts to the agency's climate programs.
  • While Trump’s budget slashes investments in climate research and climate solutions like clean energy, communities across the country are demanding bold action on climate change. We need a fully-funded EPA that can protect the health of our communities and begin to tackle the  climate change emergency.
