LCV Statement on Release of Senate Energy Package

Washington, D.C. — Today, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee announced an energy bill package comprised of bills that have already been reported out of committee. In response, LCV Legislative Director Matthew Davis issued the following statement:

“It is critical that any energy package rapidly reduces emissions and transitions to a clean energy future. It is long past time for an energy bill to be on the Senate floor and we are disappointed that it does not do nearly enough to reduce harmful pollution and deploy clean energy. Handouts to hardrock mining, nuclear energy, coal, and natural gas industries will only take us backwards. We must instead focus on investing in research and development for challenging sectors to decarbonize and clean energy sources like wind and solar, and extend and expand tax incentives to support near-term deployment and job growth in clean energy industries.”

Subject: Re: [cdp] Message Guidance: American Energy Innovation Act

Hi All, I just thought I'd share Sierra Club's statement on this bill -

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee has released an energy bill.

In Response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce Released the Following Statement:

“At a time when we need to rapidly transition away from dirty fossil fuels to 100% clean energy, this bill points us in the wrong direction. This bill includes a number of small bore proposals, some productive and some detrimental. It also incorporates some egregious non-starters such as a provision to vastly expand the permitting of destructive mining operations, as well as an expansion of fracked gas exports.

“Innovation and R&D, of course, have a role, but what is urgently needed right now goes beyond research that will have payoffs far down the road. We need action on deploying the proven clean energy technologies that are reducing emissions today. The most direct way to do that would be advancing clean energy tax incentives for technologies including solar, on and off-shore wind, energy storage, energy efficiency, and electric vehicles."

Hi everyone,

Earlier today, Senators Manchin and Murkowski introduced the American Energy Innovation Act, below is message guidance around the bill. Feel free to adapt to your organization and please reach out with any questions.

  • It's clear Senators Murkowski and Manchin are hearing the public's demand for climate action -- this bill is a small step in the right direction, but ultimately it does not come close to meeting the urgency of the climate crisis or the scale needed to address it and it includes provisions harmful to our health and environment.
  • Innovation is key to finding more solutions and advancing clean energy technology. But we have proven, existing technology like wind and solar power and energy efficiency and storage that must be immediately expanded.
  • While their intention is appreciated, currently this bill contains some counterproductive provisions including language that increases hazardous mining and fracked gas and language that eliminates long standing environmental reviews and input from local citizens.
  • America's public lands are a critical part of solving the climate crisis. We can't sell them out to mining companies at the expense of our health and environment.

Thanks,

Lauren
