Please find a report below that was written with help by both the Sierra Club and LCV on the importance of HR1. If you did support HR 1 a year ago, please take a minute to share this report and/or thank members of Congress who continue to push for democratic reforms so that we can make wins on protecting our air, water and treasured places.  Thanks,

Friends,

Find below our social media toolkit for the HR1 Anniversary and for the launch of our coalition report: Fixing Our Broken Democracy. This report outlines how democracy reform would allow progress on the issues voters care about most – from stopping climate change and ensuring all Americans can exercise their right to vote, to ensuring affordable health care and enacting gun control legislation. This report covers ten topics, with a special bonus on the census.

Please help us amplify this by tweeting, sharing on facebook, retweeting and circulating to your networks!

The report and graphics are attached, with social media below.

An ENORMOUS thank you to everyone who put so much effort into pulling this report together with such quick turnaround – drafting, editing, designing, creating social and graphics. This was really an extraordinary team effort!

Let’s go!

DFAD H.R. 1 Anniversary Toolkit

Below find anniversary talking points, social media content for the DFAD Report “Fixing Our Broken Democracy”, Anniversary social media, & graphics!

Talking Points on the Anniversary

  • The House passed the For the People Act (H.R. 1) on March 8th, 2019. Over the last year, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has blocked action on its Senate companion, S. 949, introduced by Sens. Tom Udall (D-NM) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR).

  • The For the People Act is the most comprehensive package of anti-corruption reforms since Watergate. It will end the dominance of big money in politics, protect the right to vote, and restore ethics and accountability in Washington.

  • The For the People Act contains three main pillars:

·        Ensuring all Americans can have their voices heard by reforming our voting and election laws by strengthening election security, ending partisan gerrymandering, and enacting automatic voter registration;

·        Getting big money out of politics by creating a new small-donor matching funds system for federal candidates, requiring super PACs and “dark money” political organizations to make their donors public, and strengthening oversight rules to ensure those who break campaign finance laws are held accountable; and

·        Ending corruption and holding public officials accountable by expanding conflict-of-interest laws, banning members of Congress from serving on corporate boards, and requiring major party presidential candidates to publicly disclose their tax returns.

  • To make progress on issues Americans care about--from lowering drug prices to tackling climate change--we must fight the corruption in Washington and fix our broken democracy.

  • Senator Mitch McConnell has blocked action on H.R. 1 and nearly 400 more House-passed bills that would make Americans' lives better. His refusal is directly related to the power and dominance of super PACs and dark money political organizations. The wealthy special interests opposed to ending corruption in Washington are the same ones trying to block progress on the change Americans want to see.

  • This sort of obstruction and gridlock is why voters are losing faith in their government. It’s time for Mitch McConnell to stop doing the bidding of wealthy special interests and stand up for Americans tired of the status quo in Washington. He should bring up S. 949, the For the People Act, for a vote immediately.

The report - Fixing Our Broken Democracy -  is available here

  • In the year since the House of Representatives passed the For the People Act, Senate Republicans have refused to take a vote on this important democracy reform bill and failed to make progress on the issues that matter most to Americans.

  • The Declaration for American Democracy has released a series of issue briefs that examine the most important issues at the top of voters’ minds and explain why lawmakers are failing to act on their priorities.

  • The topics include: healthcare, racial justice, climate change, fighting for a living wage, gun safety, national security, poverty, LGBTQ Americans, reigning in Wall Street and science.

  • The Declaration for American Democracy (DFAD), an unprecedented coalition of more than 145 organizations including democracy, environmental, faith, labor, good government, civil rights, and other groups, is calling for action on a comprehensive and transformational package of democracy reforms.
