Washington, D.C. – U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will host the Group of Seven annual meeting of Speakers and Heads of Parliament this Saturday, September 12, 2020.  This year’s theme is “Addressing the Climate Crisis with Economic and Environmental Justice for All,” focusing on the need for strong international action to combat the disparities in health and financial security that have been highlighted by the climate crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.  Due to the ongoing pandemic, this meeting will take place virtually and include participation from all G7 nations and the European Union:

  • Mrs. Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, U.S.A., Host
  • Mr. Anthony Rota, Speaker of the House of Commons, Canada
  • Mr. David Maria Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, European Union
  • Mr. Richard Ferrand, President of the National Assembly, France
  • Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble, President of the Bundestag, Germany
  • Mr. Roberto Fico, President of the Chamber of Deputies, Italy
  • Mr. Tadamori Ōshima, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Japan
  • Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Common, United Kingdom

“The climate crisis touches every aspect of life in every community in every country, from public health to economic security to national security – but it does not do so equally,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  “As the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted, we cannot afford to ignore the stark disparities in health and economic security that we see across the globe, which threaten the lives and livelihoods of millions.  Unless we act quickly and boldly, the most vulnerable among us – indigenous people, developing nations, communities of color, low-income communities – will be hit hardest and first by the climate crisis, and will be most economically devastated.  As House Speaker, I am proud to host this critical meeting of parliamentary leaders to call for urgent, strong and coordinated international action to combat the climate crisis and to advance justice in all our communities.”

Open-press portions of the G7 Speakers’ Meeting will be livestreamed on Speaker Pelosi’s Twitter and Facebook accounts.
