Subject: Fact Check on Republicans False Jobs Claims During Haaland Confirmation Hearing

Good morning,

During yesterday’s confirmation, Senator John Barrasso continued to parrot Big Oil’s false claims that Deb Haaland’s confirmation would hurt jobs when the truth is a bold investment in infrastructure and a clean energy economy like Deb Haaland and President Biden have put forward would create millions of good-paying union jobs across the U.S., including many in Wyoming. 

Barrasso wants to use misleading data and debunked studies to lie about clean energy investments because he doesn’t want any climate progress moving forward -- even though families and our economy are hurting because we haven’t made commonsense investments in clean energy. 

As you’re covering Day Two of the hearing, here are some useful facts about oil and gas permitting and clean energy jobs:

• Oil and gas jobs have been on a steady decline and that has nothing to do with Haaland. In 2020, the pandemic plunged demand for crude and petroleum and this led to the fastest layoffs in the oil and gas industry’s history -- even as salaries remained at record highs for executives. About 107,000 oil, gas, and petrochemical workers -- or about 7 percent of the 1.5 million employed in the industry nationally -- were laid off between March and August - despite oil and gas receiving millions in taxpayer funds in 2020. 
• Haaland and Biden have put forward a real plan to create jobs in rural America. There are millions of clean energy jobs that we can invest in now that will mean millions of more jobs across the country this year. Plus, clean energy is not only healthier, it is already saving families money.  And the facts are clear: Clean energy is the fastest growing industry in America, and these jobs pay well above the national average, have good benefits, and can’t be outsourced to other countries. 
• Barrasso, Daines, and other Big Oil-backed Republicans are trying to paint Haaland as a “radical,” when in reality she was rated the most bipartisan member of her freshman class in Congress. During Day One of the hearing, she stated repeatedly that she is eager to work for all Americans in a bipartisan way.
• Also, there is nothing radical about the belief that children should breathe clean air and drink clean water. What’s radical is denying the science of climate change and putting the profits of corporations ahead of the health and safety of the constituents Daines’ was elected to serve.
