Dear colleagues,
Last year, nearly 160 organizations representing millions of Americans joined a sign-on letter in support of the Ocean-Based Climate Solutions Act of 2020. Now, it’s time to show strong support again for the updated version of this comprehensive and ambitious legislation that seeks to leverage the ocean as a source of climate solutions!
With COP26 approaching this fall, and ongoing discussions regarding infrastructure and climate legislation, it is more critical than ever that we show strong support across the country for incorporating ocean-based solutions in the fight against climate change.
ACTIONS:
1. Please sign on using this form
2. Share this sign-on opportunity with any organizations or businesses who might want to join!
DEADLINE: COB Friday, June 18
Here’s why:
We are facing a climate emergency, and the ocean is a powerful source of solutions that have the potential to provide a fifth of the greenhouse gas emission reductions needed globally to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C.
The Ocean-Based Climate Solutions Act of 2021, sponsored by House Natural Resources Committee Chair Raúl Grijalva, is comprehensive and ambitious legislation that seeks to leverage the ocean’s potential in the fight against climate change by:
Prohibiting offshore drilling activities in most areas of the Outer Continental Shelf
Promoting offshore renewable energy
Protecting blue carbon
Supporting climate-ready fisheries
Improving ocean health,
Supporting the Biden Administration’s goal to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030
And NEW to 2021: holding plastic manufacturers accountable for single-use plastic production that is threatening human health and polluting the planet
