We are re-sending our environmental community letter to the Senate in support of the For the People Act (S1/HR1). We originally it in March with most of the below signers. Letter attached.
Deadline: Monday at 4ET
*Please email me directly if you want to add your organization's name.
We intend to send this Monday afternoon in advance of what we expect to be a procedural vote as early as Tuesday.
Details on what to expect: We expect the Senate to vote on whether to allow a floor debate on the For the People Act, which will determine if protect the freedom to vote and the future of our democracy and country. We do not expect a vote on the actual bill. The procedural vote will likely fail by Republican obstruction and abuse of the filibuster. Then we expect it to be brought back up in July. All of this can change of course but this is current thought.
Even if you can't make Monday's deadline we encourage you to come out in support of the For the People Act. As we move into recess hundreds of organizations, including most of the environmental groups below, are mobilizing our grassroots around the country to demonstrate the wide scale public support for protecting the right to vote and S1. We are pushing to pass this by the fall so states can get these voting changes in place before 2022 and to ban partisan gerrymandering so that it can ensure more fair and equitable voting maps in this current redistricting process. We are on a deadline to get this done.
Signers from March letter: Clean Air Moms Action, Clean Water Action, Defend Our Future, Earthjustice, EDF Action, Greenpeace, Interfaith Power & Light, League of Conservation Voters, National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Defense Council, The Wilderness Society, Union of Concerned Scientists, Sierra Club
