Hello, everyone!
CAP is out with a new column today, The
Oil and Gas Industry’s Dangerous Answer to Climate Change, that looks at a few of the extreme measures that oil and gas companies are taking to keep drilling in the face of record heat, rising sea levels,
melting permafrost, exacerbated disasters and other effects of the climate change that their own actions are causing. It’s a brief piece intended to highlight the irony of oil lobbyists blocking commonsense reform like the leasing pause on the one hand while
the companies they represent “deal” with the problem on the other. Our focus is on the egregious examples in the Arctic, particularly the artificial chillers proposed in the now-rejected Willow project, but we warn
that similar situations could arise elsewhere around the country unless we end fossil fuel subsidies and reinvest in a just transition to cleaner energy.
Here is a link to
the accompanying press release.
We would enormously appreciate any help promoting this column, and a few sample tweets are included below. Please feel free to amplify, share or use as is most useful and appropriate to you!
Massive thanks to everyone on this group that has worked in this area!
SAMPLE TWEETS:
No one is immune to the effects of #ClimateChange - not even the oil & gas companies causing the crisis.
But oil lobbyists continue to block action while resorting to quick fixes that worsen the problem, often at the taxpayer's expense.

Communities shouldn't have to shoulder the costs & risks of #ClimateChange on behalf of the companies causing the crisis.
Instead, the US must seize the opportunity right now to end oil industry subsidies and invest in a just transition. #BuildBackBetter https://www.americanprogress.org/?p=503055

Federal courts have reversed the Trump admin's approval of ConocoPhillips's Willow project to artificially refreeze & drill for oil in melting tundra.
@BLMNational must reject the oil industry's twisted response to the #ClimateCrisis.

Oil & gas companies have been adapting their own operations to the realities of #ClimateCrisis even as their lobbyists block the rest of the country from transitioning to cleaner energy.
It's time to stop subsidizing their gambles, and #ActOnClimate. https://www.americanprogress.org/?p=503055
