Hi all,

 

Apologies for cross-postings.  Please consider joining The Wilderness Society, Grand Canyon Trust, League of Conservation Voters, Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, and Earthjustice in signing onto a letter to President Biden urging immediate action to restore national monument protections to Grand Staircase-Escalante, Bears Ears, and Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monuments.

 

The deadline to sign on is COB Friday.  To sign on, use this link (full text of the letter can be found on the sign on link).

 

For context, the letter focuses on the existing threats to Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante from energy development including oil and gas leasing and mining claims. It specifically highlights recent actions that the Biden Administration has taken that amplify these including resuming oil and gas leasing on public lands and in considering the establishment of a strategic uranium reserve. 

 

The letter raises objections to these policies generally while also pointing out the ways that they increase the threat of damage from development in the monuments and potentially impair President Biden from following through on his promise to restore protections.  The ending ask is to both reconsider the policies writ large, and immediate act to restore protections to Bears Ears, Grand Staircase-Escalante and Northeast Canyons and Seamounts.

 

As a reminder, its been 216 days since President Biden took office and signed an Executive Order directing a review of the illegal and unprecedented Trump rollbacks but he hasn’t yet fulfilled his campaign promise to restore protections, despite recommendations from Sec. Haaland to do so being sent to the White House well over two month ago.
