Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Suggested Social
What to say (tweet thread):
"It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny." -- MLK Jr.
Today, we commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1/5)
Dr. King believed in the idea of the beloved community, and the quote in our 1st post goes to the heart of that idea. 1 of his last acts before his assassination was fighting against environmental racism by advocating for striking Black sanitation workers in Memphis, TN (2/5)
Those workers were paid far less than their white colleagues, routinely performed the dirtiest, most dangerous work & bore disproportionate health & safety risks. Dr. King's advocacy & words in Memphis helped plant the seeds for the environmental justice movement. (3/5)
The strike continued after his death, punctuated by a 42,000-strong march attended by his widow, Coretta Scott King, & culminated in a victory for the workers. It was one of the first victories in the fight for environmental justice in America. (4/5)
That’s why today isn’t a “day off”, it’s a day of service & commemoration. We commemorate Dr. King’s memory, & we keep his memory alive by being in service to our fellow citizens, especially in the fight for climate justice. (5/5)

EPA Soot Pollution Proposal Rapid Response Guidance
.@EPA has released an unnecessarily weak soot proposal that ignores a mountain of scientific evidence & shows current limits on soot pollution aren't enough to protect our public health & prevent premature deaths! We need stronger, more comprehensive #SolutionsForPollution now!
Exposure to soot - & inhaling it - leads to increased:
❌mortality rates
❌hospitalizations
❌visits to the ER
This is why we need much stronger soot standards from @EPA to protect the health of our communities. This won't cut it. #SolutionsForPollution
#DYK: 63 million Americans experience unhealthy spikes in daily soot or particle pollution & more than 20 million Americans experience dangerous levels of soot pollution on a year-round basis? It’s why we need MUCH STRONGER soot standards from @EPA! We can do better. #S4P
ATTN @EPA: stronger soot standards will advance environmental justice! Overburdened communities of color breathe more soot pollution, on average, than white people because they live & work in areas with high levels of soot pollution. Let's craft much stronger standards! #S4P
A 2021 study found a severe disparity in soot exposure between white Americans & Black/Latino/AAPI Americans across the USA both in rural & urban settings & at all $$$ levels. It's why we need MUCH STRONGER soot standards from @EPA to advance environmental justice! #S4P
