Climate Action Campaign Efforts Urging President Biden to Recommit to Climate Promises During State of the Union Pay Off

CAC and Partners Now Planning Activities to Help Biden “Finish the Job”

February 9th, 2023

In the weeks and days leading up to the President’s State of the Union address to Congress, the Climate Action Campaign (CAC) and partners launched a comprehensive push to ensure that the President would publicly recommit to solving the climate crisis at the scale that science says is needed. Below are key campaign highlights and activities surrounding the SOTU.

In advance of the speech, CAC Director Margie Alt outlined to CQ Roll Call the continued and urgent need for President Biden to finish the job on climate.

The campaign also blanketed downtown D.C. with over 1,000 flyers encouraging President Biden to lean in on climate in his SOTU address.

The afternoon before the speech, the campaign hosted a “Slices for Climate Solutions” pizza party outside the Longworth House Office Building. At the event, members of Congress were encouraged to wear their ‘warming stripe’ pins during the speech to publicly highlight the need for bold climate action at the SOTU. The Washington Post Climate 202 newsletter covered members of Congress – including Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chair Thomas R. Carper and Representative Dan Goldman – proudly showing their stripes and their commitment to slash pollution and advance clean energy.

Other members seen wearing pins at the address included: Sen. Jeff Merkley, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, Rep. Paul Tonko, Rep. Maxwell Frost, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. Dan Goldman, Rep. Valerie Foushee, Rep. Susan Wild, and Rep. Mike Levin.

After the speech, CAC shared message guidance with partners and compiled a roundup of media statements. In her statement, Alt noted, “We will continue to do all we can to support strong federal action on climate and to make sure President Biden can deliver on the commitment he made to the American people and the world. The cost of inaction is only escalating every year. Our climate can’t wait. We must and we will ‘finish the job.”

Now, as Biden Administration officials fan out across the country to tout the accomplishments President Biden outlined in his address, CAC and other climate advocates launched a national mobilization effort to keep climate action at the forefront of the administration’s work. Politico Morning Energy previewed this national campaign, highlighting that advocates will “ensure climate action remains a top priority for the president and that his administration recommits to slashing climate pollution in half by 2030.” And in the coming days CAC’s Solutions for Pollution campaign will run a spot on cable tv reinforcing the President’s commitment to Finish the Job.
