Hi all,

This morning, Secretary Haaland finalized a 20-year mineral withdrawal of public lands within a 10-mile radius of the Chaco Culture National Historical Park. This is a hard-won victory for Pueblos and Tribes whose culture and history is inextricably linked to the Greater Chaco Landscape. We are celebrating the many years of tireless work it has taken to arrive at this juncture, and we are grateful to the Indigenous communities, conservation and preservationist groups, elected officials, and the members of the public who made today’s action happen.

Please join us in celebrating today by utilizing the Chaco Administrative Withdrawal Toolkit and spreading the good news with your audiences! We are following the lead of our Indigenous partners, like the All Pueblos Council of Governors and Native Land Institute, so please uplift their materials and messages. Please also see below for social media guidance from the toolkit.

One important detail from announcement here: “The withdrawal applies only to public lands and federal mineral estate and does not apply to minerals owned by private, state or Tribal entities. It does not affect valid existing leases; during the 20-year withdrawal period, production from existing wells could continue, additional wells could be drilled on existing leases, and Navajo Nation allottees can continue to lease their minerals.”

Thanks,

Kiara

I acknowledge that I reside on the traditional and stolen homelands of the Nacotchtank and Piscataway peoples. May we acknowledge the historic and ongoing injustices perpetrated against Indigenous peoples and honor their legacies, their lives, and their descendants.
