Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

California Coalition Asks Court To Back EPA — “A California-led 18-state coalition is backing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in a legal action asking for rejection of a challenge by 19 states that contend California’s future strict emissions controls will regulate the trucking industry from existence. California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced with other state officials the June 28 filing in the U.S. District Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia a legal maneuver to counter lawsuits against EPA for authorizing its regulations to speed adoption of California’s zero-emission laws for medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Newsom stated, ‘We did not back down against radical efforts to undo our zero-emission vehicle rules, and we won’t back down from defending these common-sense, life-saving clean truck policies.’” [Transportation Topics, 6/30/23 (=)]

States & Local

Michigan

Michigan, Daimler Creating 'Truck Stop Of The Future' — “Daimler Trucks and the state of Michigan are teaming up to build ‘The Truck Stop of the Future’ — a federally funded charging hub for commercial electric vehicles. The state of Michigan announced a real-world prototype program known as the Mobility Charging Hub, which it said will help companies transition fleets to electric commercial vehicles. Michigan is billing the Mobility Charging Hub as ‘The Truck Stop of the Future.’ The concept blends a traditional truck stop business model with a dedicated EV charging hub. As EVs become more prevalent, truck stops will inevitably need to evolve their existing service models. This represents an opportunity to unlock new revenue in the trucking space, create new jobs, as well as redesign spaces into more sustainable assets, the state said.” [Heavy-Duty Trucking, 6/30/23 (=)]

Electric ‘Truck Stop Of The Future’ Plans Developing In Michigan — “Daimler Truck North America is working with the state of Michigan to build the electric ‘truck stop of the future.’ Daimler and the state are developing a prototype program known as the Mobility Charging Hub, the Michigan Economic Development Corp. announced June 29. Detroit-based diversified energy company DTE Energy is a third initial partner in the project. The goal is to help companies to transition their fleets to electric commercial vehicles test new technologies, digital services, and business models designed to accelerate deployment of commercial electric trucks at scale and modernize the truck stop experience. The truck stop of the future program also will support passenger vehicle charging. Charging infrastructure remains a challenge for the broad deployment of electric vehicles, but projects like this show that progress can be made toward a lower-emission future, according to the Michigan Economic Development Corp.” [Land Line, 6/30/23 (=)]
