Will Cleaner Diesel Trucks Matter In ZEV World? — “Allen Schaeffer sits in the middle of the multidirectional push and debate over what will be driving the powertrain of tomorrow’s trucks. He is the executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum (DTF), a trade group of suppliers along the diesel engine supply chain. And recently, he’s been busy. Some of his group’s members were part of the groundbreaking deal signed earlier this month with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) that most importantly aligns the CARB rules on nitrous oxide with existing federal changes. The deal is generally seen as a victory for the OEMs that make diesel engines. Secondly, CARB in recent months formally adopted the California Clean Fleet rule, which in combination with the California Clean Trucks Rule puts that state — the fifth or sixth biggest economy in the world, depending on the measurement — on the road to nothing but zero-emission vehicles in the passenger and trucking sector.” [FreightWaves, 7/19/23 (=)]

Lion Electric

Lion Electric Raises Cash For Expansion — “North American electric utility vehicle manufacturer Lion Electric has raised 142 dollars to help finance its expansion in Canada and the US. The financing transactions include the issuance of 74 million dollars in senior unsecured convertible debentures to a group of subscribers, including Investissement Québec, Fonds de solidarité des travailleurs du Québec, and Fondaction. Moreover, Lion Electric issued 90 million Canadian dollars (68 million US dollars) in senior secured non-convertible debentures to subscribers such as Mach Group and the Mirella & Lino Saputo Foundation, as well as 22.5 million common share purchase warrants. The exercise price was 2.81 CAD (2.13 USD). Lion Electric is an electric utility vehicle manufacturer. Just recently, it presented its Lion5, an all-electric Class 5 truck powered by Lion’s new in-house engineered and manufactured 800V battery packs. The Lion5 has a maximum payload of up to 12,500 pounds, and production should start before the end of the year.” [Electrive, 7/19/23 (=)]

Rivian Automotive Inc.

Amazon Adds 5,000th Rivian Electric Delivery Van To U.S. Fleet — “Amazon’s growing U.S. fleet now includes some 5,000 Rivian electric delivery vans, meeting the needs of its e-commerce customers and helping the company achieve its promise of creating a more sustainable private fleet. ‘This is just the start of what will be 100,000 vehicles on the road by 2030, at which time Amazon will eliminate millions of metric tons of carbon per year,’ a spokesperson for the e-commerce giant told FleetOwner in a statement. Rivian was one of the first OEMs to benefit from Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, a venture investment program with an initial $2 billion in funding, supporting the development of sustainable technologies with a goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. ‘We worked together on everything from designing the size and space of the interior to what the headlights look like, and even the sound the vehicles make when they’re on the road,’ Amazon representative Katie Larsen told FleetOwner. ‘You can’t help but smile when you’re driving it,’” [FleetOwner, 7/18/23 (+)]
