Hi all,

I wanted to invite our broader environmental community to a virtual briefing on NOAA’s proposed vessel speed rule on Tuesday, July 25th at 3pm.

While the briefing is of course specific to this issue and efforts to conserve the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale, it might be of interest and offer lessons to others who don’t necessarily work on this issue given the variety of legislative attacks we have been seeing (preempting the regulatory process before it’s even complete,  trying to get the Coast Guard involved, and of course funding prohibitions  etc. etc.)

There has been a lot of misinformation circulating about this proposal which has not even been finalized yet.  Accordingly, given the number of ongoing legislative attacks on this rule, we wanted to address some of those claims directly and separate fact from fiction.

Details on the briefing follow below:

Speeding Towards Extinction: Correcting the Record on Right Whales and the Vessel Speed Rule

Join scientists, lawyers, and policy experts for a conversation on the North Atlantic right whale Vessel Speed Rule and the congressional actions that are threatening the future of this critically endangered species. In this virtual discussion, we’ll explain why NOAA’s proposed amendments to the Vessel Speed Rule are urgently needed, shed light on the potential impacts of the latest legislative attacks, and correct the record on this important issue. With continued efforts by some members of Congress to chip away at the Endangered Species Act - the most effective law for protecting wildlife in danger of extinction - it is imperative that we stand up for the science and evidence-based decision making that has been used for decades to protect our most imperiled species. In this briefing, we’ll share facts, resources, and the science behind this rule and the incredible whales it is aimed to protect.
