Hi folks,
As New York Climate Week prepares to kick off, I’m writing to invite you to a virtual session on plastics and climate that I'll be hosting next Tuesday, September 19, at 11am ET.
I’ll be joined for this session by John Willis, Head of Research at Planet Tracker, and Gemma Corrigan, Head of Policy and ESG Integration at Federated Hermes, to discuss new
Ocean Conservancy research showing that investor and corporate climate commitments omit plastics, jeopardizing our ability to meet Paris targets. We’ll also talk through decarbonization strategies for the sector and highlight
opportunities to mitigate the risks of plastics so we can succeed in achieving our climate goals.
I hope you’ll join us – you can register for the session here –
and please help us get the word out by sharing the event with your networks.
Thank you!
Cheers,
Aarthi
VIRTUAL SESSION: The plastics gap: investor and company climate commitments omit plastics, putting Paris targets at risk
Time: Tuesday, September 19th, 11am ET
Description: The plastic bottle on the beach is oil – but we don’t treat it that way. The climate impacts of plastics undermine our ability
to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and prevent catastrophic climate change. Plastic reduction and decarbonization of the plastics industry are critical mitigation strategies that require attention – and investment.
As companies and investors begin to heed calls to limit society’s dependence on fossil fuels, plastics, a driver of fossil fuel growth and use, are too often overlooked. 99% of plastics are made
from fossil fuel feedstocks and the plastics industry is on a rapid growth trajectory, generating high levels of greenhouse gas pollution, from production to disposal, and locking in continued oil and gas extraction for decades to come. Some climate policies
even incentivize continued build-out.
This panel will feature new research that highlights major gaps in corporate disclosures and climate commitments related to plastics and the risks associated with continued dependence on them.
Further, it will explore decarbonization strategies for the sector and opportunities to mitigate the risks of plastics. At a time when regulators are working to advance the clean energy transition and negotiate a global treaty on plastics, this session will
provide actionable insights for corporate decisionmakers thinking about this multi-faceted problem.
