HUGE news! Today, President Biden announced that the Administration will block the creation of new fossil fuel export facilities until their climate impact is thoroughly assessed. This block will halt the creation of over a dozen more fossil fuel facilities that are currently under consideration.
Here is what we know: President Biden’s action, which makes an exception for national security emergencies, is the biggest takedown of Big Oil and Gas in U.S. history. Donald Trump promises to “drill, baby, drill,” on day one of his presidency, and his election would undo President Biden’s historic action today. This decision is a win for vulnerable communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis and marks another step toward ending our reliance on dirty fossil fuels that poison our air and water, increase costly and dangerous extreme weather, and threaten our future.

The halt of Louisiana’s CP2 project alone prevents a nearly 30 year commitment to Big Oil exports, locking in the planet’s reliance on fossil fuels long past what scientists have identified as the breaking point for our climate. And, this puts the brakes on what would be “one of the biggest carbon polluters” in Louisiana - set to poison a community where nearly half the population is Black, many are poor, and the land is highly vulnerable to climate change.

This is far from President Biden’s only effort to fight the climate crisis. For your fingertips, a few more facts:
On Day One of his presidency, America rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement and has made historic investments in clean energy.
In December, the Biden Administration announced new rules to reduce methane gas emissions by 80 percent.
The President has also moved to protect more public lands from drilling and committed billions to help families access affordable clean energy.
