Landfills Leak Methane At Alarming Rates, New Research Shows – “Any climate action plan that aims to quickly turn the tide of global warming has to tackle methane, which traps orders of magnitude more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide in the first years after it’s emitted. For this reason, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently adopted rules requiring oil and gas drillers to monitor for leaks of the potent greenhouse gas — and fix them immediately if they’re found. The new regulations also empower community groups and environmental advocates to report fossil fuel companies if they can provide evidence of leaks themselves.” [Canary Media, 5/24/24 (=)]

Closing The Enteric Methane Emissions Innovation Gap: A Call For Funding High-Quality Research – “Methane emissions are a potent greenhouse gas, warming the climate more than 80 times faster than carbon dioxide on a 20-year timescale. Rapidly and significantly reducing methane is the most effective way to reduce the rate of warming, especially over the next few decades.  Agriculture is responsible for 40% of human-caused methane, which means it’s also an area where methane reductions would have a wide-reaching impact. In fact, reductions in enteric methane emissions, or the methane gas released when ruminant animals like cows burp, are a critical component of efforts to stabilize the climate.” [EDF, 5/23/24 (=)]
