Alabama Senators Support Legislation To End Incentives For Reducing Methane Emissions – “On Wednesday, Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, introduced the ‘Natural Gas Tax Repeal Act,’ pointing to excessive energy costs and ongoing inflation as justification. Both of Alabama’s senators, Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville, were among the 12 other Republican senators to cosponsor the bill. Just two pages long, the Natural Gas Tax Repeal Act would repeal the entirety of Section 136 of the Clean Air Act. Added to the Clean Air Act by the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, Section 136 established two sets of incentives for gas and oil companies to reduce methane and other greenhouse gas emissions.” [Alabama Reporter, 5/30/24 (=)]

Colorado Again Leads The Way With Methane Verification Protocol – “Developing more accurate emissions inventories with real-world measurement data of oil and gas climate pollution is key to verifying our progress toward addressing climate change. Earlier this month, the Colorado Air Pollution Control Division achieved a major breakthrough to do just that when it finalized its Greenhouse Gas Intensity Verification Protocol, marking the first time a government agency has created a comprehensive framework for measurement, reporting and verification of methane emissions at oil and gas production sites.” [EDF, 5/29/24 (=)]

FDA Oks Methane-Reducing Feed Ingredient For Cows – “The Food and Drug Administration’s approval of a feed additive that reduces methane emissions from cows is a big step forward in the dairy industry’s efforts against climate change, a group representing farmers said. By greenlighting sales of Bovaer, which cuts cows’ digestion-related methane emissions, the FDA opened the way for incentives the Department of Agriculture is offering farmers to try the ingredient on their herds, said Paul Bleiberg, executive vice president for government relations at the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), representing farmer-owned bargaining cooperatives.” [Politico, 5/29/24 (=)]
