Hi all,
Can your organization sign-on to a national letter asking New York Governor Hochul to sign the Climate Change Superfund Act that will make polluters pay for climate damages?
Please add your name by 12:00pm ET on Monday.
We're asking groups all across the country to sign this letter because passing this law in New York would be a win of national significance and open the floodgates for more states to pass bills that make Big Oil pay for climate damages.
But Governor Hochul is dragging her feet on signing it. If we don't get her to do it before the end of the year, we'll have to go back to the drawing board.
Passing this law would be a big deal for New York. Climate damages already cost the state over $2 billion last year and it's only going to get worse. The money raised from this fund could go to repairing roads, retrofitting schools, and investing in climate resiliency, with 40% of the funds allocated to disadvantaged communities.
But it's also a big deal nationally. New York's law would help mainstream the idea that it's time to make Big Oil companies pay for climate damages. That sets up for more wins at the state, federal, and international level.
The bill is overwhelmingly popular: 70% of New Yorkers support the idea. 89% of Democrats nationwide are on board.
We know Governor Hochul is susceptible to national pressure and is already feeling the heat on her (lack of) environmental record -- so all of our organizations weighing in will make a big impact.
We're going to be delivering over 50,000 petition signatures to her NYC office on Tuesday at 12:00pm ET and will include this letter as part of the delivery. If you're in NYC, come join us!
Thank you,
Jamie
