Hope folks were able to get some rest this weekend. We have a tough week ahead. If most of you were on today's partners call, you heard about the goals of this week and what we expect during a week's worth of Senate immigration debate.
Some background:
At 5:30 PM today, the Senate is expected to begin debate on an immigration bill with the goal of getting 60 votes for bipartisan legislation that protects Dreamers. This is expected to be a truly open amendment process, where both Democrats and Republicans are able to introduce amendments to a neutral bill. For context, this type of open process has not happened in nearly a decade, so this is unique and somewhat uncharted territory for this issue.
While we anticipate a wide array of amendments will be introduced, we believe the only approach that can meet the 60 vote threshold will be a narrow one.
How we'll work together:With the help of experts, we're going to put into place a rapid response operation. They'll quickly analyze amendments and a team of comms folks will create toplines and digital materials and distribute it your way. We'll also ping groups and monitor your social media channels as well as those of friendly members of Congress to collect and distribute for amplification.
Many of you will have certain expertise that are essential to responding to attacks. Please be sure to continue sharing your materials via the listservs or email Kristen Ellingboe at kristenellingboe@gmail.com so she can collect it and make sure it's part of our daily/hourly distributions.
Prep Resources
We've put together talking points, a message house with the expected categories of attacks, and other resources. We highly suggest folks prep and start today fighting back against Grassley's bill AKA the Trump Mass Deportation Bill ("Secure and Succeed Act").
1. PRIMARY MESSAGE FRAME - these are the main overarching messages for the week that we want to keep driving. Nice and simple.
2. MESSAGE HOUSE OF REBUTTAL POINTS - this includes all the major categories of attacks, including the White House proposal, Grassley bill, "chain migration", diversity visa, and more. Also includes sample tweets for each category.
3. TO IMMIGRANTS WITH LOVE - important as well that we lift up the values message for immigrants during this debate. The #ToImmigrantsWithLove Day of Action is on Wed and great campaign to plug into.
4. GRASSLEY BILL "Secure and Succeed Act" - We really need to push back against this bill. We'll have more info, but the message house above includes some sample tweets, and here are RTs you can do:
