Seafood Harvesters: MSA Bill Would Undercut Commercial Fishery Management. “The Modernizing Recreational Fisheries Management Act (S. 1520), a bill that could soon be reviewed by the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, ‘would harm the nation’s commercial fishermen and seafood supply chain,’ warns Christopher Brown. Brown is president of the Seafood Harvesters of America (SHA) who sent a letter Friday to senators John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, and Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, the chairman and ranking member of the panel respectively. Congress has yet to address the reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Act (MSA), the legislation that forms the foundation of US federal fishing regulations, though it is expected to get attention early in 2018. S. 1520, which was introduced by Sen. Roger Wicker, a Mississippi Republican, in July 2017, is one of at least two bills circulating on Capitol Hill.” [Undercurrent News, 2/19/18 (=)]
