Subject: [Six Concrete Actions] Follow Up to 6/18 Partners Call on Family Separation

*Apologies for cross posting. Please circulate widely.*

All:

Thank you to those who were able to join today’s partners call. Action items and resources referenced on today’s call can be found below. If there are formatting issues, the google doc version of this email can be viewed here. Feel free to circulate these asks widely to your network.

Flagging a time-sensitive ask upfront: national, state, and local organizations are invited to sign a joint statement opposing Speaker Ryan’s anti-immigrant bill, which does NOT address family separation, by 12 p.m. ET on Tuesday, June 19th. Link to Statement | Link to Sign

SIX CONCRETE ACTIONS:

Many of you have asked “What can I do?” There are many calls to action and many ways to engage. The list below includes only a few examples.

  1. Join and support a mass mobilization on June 30th in Washington, DC and across the country. Join a march on Washington and Families Belong Together rally led by MoveOn and others. Distributed actions will be planned across the country. To partner on the DC event or 6/30 distributed events, please RSVP here for a partners call at 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday, June 19th. RSVP here even if you can't make it to receive follow up details on how to plug in.

  1. Join and support upcoming mobilizations at the border:

    1. Thursday, June 21st - Faith mission to the Ursula processing center in TX, led by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. Please email Jordyn Bussey at  bussey@civilrights.org to join the delegation of rabbis, ministers, bishiops, and other faith leaders who will be ministering to children and holding a vigil outside of Ursula.

    1. Saturday, June 23rd - Families Belong Together March in San Diego, CA, led by San Diego Indivisible. See additional details on Facebook.

    1. Sunday, June 24th - Action in Tornillo, TX, led by Voto Latino. Visit www.stopseparation.org to sign up and learn more.

    1. Thursday, June 28th - Mass mobilization at the Brownsville Federal Court in TX, led by the ACLU. Join the #FamiliesBelongTogether rally in Linear Park at 11 a.m. RSVP here or on Facebook and contact Natalie Montelongo at nmontelongo@aclu.org with questions.

    1. Date TBD (Possibly July 1st) - Moms march from El Paso to Tornillo, TX, led by Paola Mendoza. Email pmendoza44@gmail.com for more details and to join.

    1. Volunteer with local organizations. Sacred Heart Church, NETA, ProBAR, and the Texas Civil Rights Project are just some of the organizations you can help if you are in TX or willing to travel there. Please refer to the Families Belong Together Guide on How to Help for more details.

  1. Weigh in with Members of Congress! Encourage your network/membership to urge their Members of Congress to use Congress’ oversight authority to stop separating families and to VOTE DOWN the two anti-immigrant bills moving through the House this week. The House is expected to vote on two anti-immigrant bills on Thursday, June 21st: one proposed by Rep. Goodlatte and another proposed by Speaker Ryan. Neither bill addresses the administration’s policy of separating families, and neither bill fixes the administration’s decision to end DACA.

    1. On family separation: The ACLU has a call tool specifically for Senators; the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) has a call tool that directs calls, tweets, facebook posts, and emails to all Members of Congress.

      1. Ask MoCs to urge the administration to end the policy of forcibly separating families, particularly by weighing in on social media.

      2. Ask MoCs to also push for President Trump, DHS Secretary Nielsen, and Attorney General Sessions to end the practice of separating and jailing families via letters, appropriations requirements, and Congressional hearings.

      3. Ask MoCs to cosponsor family separation legislation and take other actions listed in the Hill briefing document developed by the Immigration Hub and the Women’s Refugee Commission.

    1. On the two anti-immigrant bills: Please ramp up outreach to Congress ASAP via calls, digital engagement, in-district meetings, and lobbying in DC to dissuade Republicans from voting for the both bills. It is especially important to defeat the Ryan bill and ensure no Democrat votes for it. Please issue vote recs by your organizations ASAP and speak out publicly against the Ryan bill and Goodlatte bill in advance of the vote. Statements are particularly needed on Tuesday, June 19th. Resources can be found below:

      1. United We Dream’s call tool opposing both the Goodlatte bill and Ryan bill: 844-505-3769 directs calls to target House moderates; when folks call the line, they will hear a recording directing them on asks.

      2. Sample Vote Recommendation on the Ryan Bill from the Immigration Hub

      3. Analysis/Summary of the Ryan Bill from the Immigration Hub

      4. Fact Sheet: Ryan’s “Compromise” Bill Does NOT End Family Separation from the Immigration Hub

      5. Talking Points on Family Separation in the Ryan Bill from the Immigration Hub

      6. Click-to-Tweets Targeting Moderate Republicans in Congress on the Ryan Bill from the Immigration Hub

      7. Social Media Content and Graphics Opposing the Goodlatte Bill from United We Dream

      8. Top Ten Worst Provisions in the Goodlatte Bill from the Immigration Hub

      9. Additional policy analysis on the Goodlatte bill from various organizations can be found in a Shared Google Drive Folder

  1. Continue speaking out on social media to raise awareness about the administration’s cruel policy. Keep tweeting at @realDonaldTrump and @SecNielsen to stop forcibly separating families. We Belong Together's demands for the Administration can be RT’d here. Ask the administration: what are its plans to reunify the families it has torn apart?

    1. Sample tweets can be found here. Use #FamiliesBelongTogether Graphics.

  1. Sign and circulate a petition to your membership/network.

    1. The ACLU, MomsRising, MoveOn, and CREDO have petitions to Sec. Nielsen. Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) and Change.org also have a new petition out to the Department of Homeland Security..

    2. The Women’s March has a petition to Ivanka Trump.

    3. Define American has a petition to Attorney General Sessions.

    4. The National Domestic Workers Alliance has a petition to President Trump.

    5. The Women’s Refugee Commission also has a petition that is easy to sign and share.

  1. Contribute financially if possible.

    1. Purchase something off of the Sacred Heart Amazon Wishlist or donate directly to organizations leading this work on the ground and nationally:

      1. ProBAR and IJP

      2. The Florence Project

      3. Al Otro Lado

      4. LUPE

      5. Fuerza del Valle

      6. Texas Civil Rights Project

      7. Women’s Refugee Commission

      8. Kids in Need of Defense (KIND)

      9. National Immigrant Justice Center

Tailored ask for lawyers and organizations needing lawyers: If you are a lawyer, please join more than 1,000 lawyers who have signed up to volunteer to do legal work for immigrants separated from their children here. If you are an organization needing volunteer lawyers, please email Traci Feit Love, President and Executive Director at Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG), at support@l4gg.org.

Thank you for all that you’re doing to keep families together!
