GREENLATINOS DENOUNCES THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATIONS REVERSAL OF FEDERAL CLEAN CAR STANDARDS
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In response to the Trump Administration rollback of Clean Car Standards, Mark Magaña, GreenLatinos President & CEO, issued the following statement:
“The Trump Administration continues to advance an agenda that dismantles environmental protections and puts the Latino community's health in jeopardy. Through the Clean Air Act, the EPA has been charged with curbing carbon pollution and enacting appropriate car emission standards. This common-sense policy that dates back to the 1960’s is now being threatened by the Trump Administration, as they rollback clean car standards, continuing to side with the big oil and gas industry.
Currently, there are twelve states and D.C. that follow California in setting stricter car emission standards, following collaboration with both the Obama Administration and the auto industry in establishing appropriate standards. Paired with the CAFE standards, which the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is also rolling back at the cost of consumer savings, the clean car standards allow for innovation from the auto industry and, more importantly, reduce carbon emission, oil usage and improve our air quality.
The Latino community already faces a tremendous disadvantage when it comes to respiratory illness and asthma. 1 in 2 Latinos in the U.S. live in counties that consistently violate air quality ozone standards, leading to increased respiratory illness and asthma within our community. The rollback of car emission standards will only further impact the health of those communities.
GreenLatinos rejects the EPA proposal of rolling back the established car emission standards and stands with the various states currently challenging this reversal in court."
