Hi everyone,

Below are notes from the Hurricane Michael response call that was held this afternoon.  If you have any questions please let me know.

Participating groups:

EDF, Climate Nexus, EA, Environment Florida, Climate Reality, AWL, PSR, PSR Florida, Hip Hop Caucus, Indivisible, Hip Hop Caucus, Sierra Club, National Low Income Housing Coalition, NRDC, Earthjustice, Hispanic Federation, MCAF

Action Items:

·       Encourage people to retweet John Morales with NBC 6 – chief meteorologist has been tweeting a lot on this tie between hurricanes and climate

·       For help highlighting stories, email Yamila Pino at yamila@prosperolatino.com

·       Please get in touch with Erin Burger eburger@cacampaign.com or Monica Lee mlee@cacampaign.com if you have any resource needs

Message Frame:

·       Devastating storm for several parts of the East and Gulf Coast

·       Connecting it to findings from the IPCC report

·       Connecting to attacks from the admin on climate protections

·       Admin is rolling back climate protections that would mitigate future storms

·       Looking to get a sense of what additional comms materials would be useful to you all

·       Looking to highlight local impacts – state-level impacts rose to the national level in NC re: pig farms and coal ash. Could be algal blooms here.

Prospero

·       Should work to identify extreme weather experts in FL who can speak to reporters and make the tie between hurricanes and climate change. Please let us know if you have some in mind

o   Would like to put together a media availability

·       Saw an article from the Guardian questioning Gov. Scott’s climate record, making that connection.

·       If you know a story on the ground about shelters or anything else, please let us know. Stories like that during Florence, Maria, and Harvey were compelling. We can connect folks with reporters.

·        Talking about the storm in the context of adaptation and resiliency. Focusing on storms occurring more frequently, getting people out of harms way, NFID, Stafford Act, greater focus on mitigating risks.

Climate Nexus – media advisory went out yesterday to newsdesks at the national level with a list of hurricane experts

·       Put together Michael-specific talking points to make sure people have safe-harbor language

·       One of the notable characteristics is the strength/intensity of the storm. Climate science connection is extremely weak here. Storm surge & rain fall are climate connecting.

·       IPCC report talks about this the same way.

·       Talking about the strength of the storm in the future tense is what’s valid by climate science

·       That background was sent to the CDP list
